Short Description

The story incorporates elements of a strategic mystery, as the protagonists must outmaneuver opponents who possess considerable political influence and institutional power.

Inspiration

I drew inspiration for Decisive Endgame from wanting to bring Tierra and Victoria’s long investigation to a conclusion that required more than simply identifying and exposing the conspirators. As they prepare their final strategy, they face a much harder question: What happens when revealing the truth could damage public confidence as much as the conspiracy itself?

I wanted the final novel to explore the responsibility that comes with possessing information capable of changing the country. Tierra and Victoria must devise a strategy that protects the presidency, exposes the conspiracy, and prevents those responsible from escaping accountability. Those objectives do ’t always align, and achieving one could make the others nearly impossible. With the Electoral College vote approaching, every decision affects the election, the institutions around it, and the public’s faith in the democratic process.

At its heart, Decisive Endgame examines a political struggle in which identifying the enemy is no longer enough. Months of investigation, personal sacrifice, and dangerous confrontation have brought Tierra and Victoria to one final question: Can they save the presidency without destroying the very institutions they are fighting to protect?

Behind the Book: Decisive Endgame

• The title is a chess reference. Tierra’s confrontation with Brian Cooper in Revealed Secrets ends with her believing that he has trapped her king. The final novel becomes a contest to determine whether the apparent checkmate can still be escaped. You would think I am great at chess. I am not.

• The prologue takes readers eight years into Victoria Larsen’s past, when she and Daniel Murphy were trainees at the FBI Academy. I wanted their present-day conflict to be rooted in a rivalry that began long before the conspiracy.

• Hogan’s Alley is a real FBI training facility at Quantico. The mock town includes businesses, residences, and actors who participate in realistic scenarios designed to test how future agents respond to unexpected threats.

• Victoria and Murphy possess very different strengths. Murphy excels in classrooms and memorized procedures, while Victoria trusts her instincts and reacts decisively under pressure. Their Hogan’s Alley exercise immediately establishes that difference.

• The opening exercise also foreshadows one of the novel’s central ideas: no procedure is ever perfect for an unprecedented crisis. Eventually, someone must assess the risks and act.

• Front Burner’s debate over whether to publish reflects a genuine journalistic dilemma. The team possesses alarming information, but the evidence has no reliable chain of custody and could be dismissed as fabricated.

• Brian dares Tierra to publish because he understands that releasing an incomplete story could strengthen the conspiracy rather than expose it. Sometimes the most obvious move is exactly what an opponent wants.

• The Electoral College creates the novel’s decisive deadline. Once the electors vote, and especially after Congress certifies the result, challenging the election becomes politically and constitutionally more difficult.

• Pennsylvania has not certified its election results, and neither presidential candidate can secure the necessary electoral votes without it. The entire country’s political future therefore rests on resolving what happened in one state.

• I wanted Alicia’s final dilemma to be more complicated than choosing between power and integrity. Telling the truth could end her presidency, damage public confidence, and throw the country into a constitutional crisis. Staying silent would let the cabal control her.

• Guillermo’s conversation with Victoria gave me an opportunity to balance Victoria’s guilt with warmth and humor. His stream of Spanish idioms leaves her translating phrases about three-legged cats, angry goats, and sleeping shrimp while he helps her regain her determination.

• Dial Pirate and Olivia move the conspiracy files into the Vault, the same dark-web repository where Isiah originally hid them. Returning the evidence there gives the storyline a deliberate sense of symmetry.

• Brian Cooper’s meeting with Abe Froman in Union Square Park contains a small movie joke: Abe shares his name with the fictional “Sausage King of Chicago” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

• The chess players in Union Square reinforce the novel’s central metaphor. Brian views politics as a board on which people become pieces, each moved toward an objective they may not fully understand.

• The final conflict is not simply about identifying the guilty parties. The women must determine how to expose them, preserve the election, hold the conspirators accountable, and prevent the truth from destroying the institutions they are trying to protect.

• Decisive Endgame was designed to provide a genuine conclusion to the five-book storyline. The characters have changed considerably since Justifiable Deceit, and the final novel forces each of them to decide what they a willing to sacrifice for the truth.
